The Provinces of the Roman Empire (Circa 120 CE)

The Provinces of the Roman Empire (Circa 120 CE) Roman areas (Latin proviniciae, particular provincia) were regulatory and regional units of the Roman Empire, built up by different sovereigns as income producing regions all through Italy and afterward the remainder of Europe as the domain extended. The governors of the territories were regularly chosen from men who had been emissaries (Roman officers), or previous praetors (the central equity of justices) could likewise fill in as representative. In certain spots, for example, Judaea, the relatively lower positioning common officials were selected the senator. The areas gave a wellspring of pay to the senator and assets for Rome. Differing Borders The number and outskirts of the regions under Roman principle changed about continually as conditions adjusted in the different areas. During the last time of the Roman Empire known as the Dominate, the territories were each messed up into littler units. Dr. Spock Free Essays

At the point when Babies are taken care of on their stomach, the infants rest sufficiently and get surprised less. So for guardians that haven’t gotten rest for quite a long time they will in general decide to place babies in this position in light of the fact that, at long last they get the opportunity to get some rest. Guardians do this obviously avoiding potential risk, purchase not smoking keeping child close by while dozing and by breastfeeding. We will compose a custom exposition test on Dr. Spock or then again any comparative point just for you Request Now The American Academy of Pediatrics PAP suggests that infants should just be put on their stomachs during what they call â€Å"tummy time† while the youngster is up, caution and playing. The PAP additionally prescribes to decrease the danger of KIDS guardians ought to â€Å"Use a solid sleeping pad (maintain a strategic distance from delicate sheet material) Not letting your infant rest in your bed. Breastfeeding your infant, if conceivable. Shielding your newborn child from presentation to cigarette, stogie, or funnel smoke. Running a fan in your baby’s room around evening time to improve air circulation† (â€Å"Sleep†). The PAP just prescribes infant to be put on their stomach just if the pediatrician suggests it or if â€Å"Infants with entanglements of serious throwing up (reflux)† (Children). The other weakness to taking care of child on its back is that they can create â€Å"philologically’ a leveled head. DRP. Scare didn’t suggest it, he said that it was â€Å"more alright with colic babies the weight on the midsection eases the gas primary, and on the off chance that they upchuck they’re more averse to stifle on their vomits† (Spook and Rottener 210). He additionally contradicted it, on the grounds that â€Å"babies will in general keep the head moved in the direction of a similar side, this may level that side of the head, this can benefit from outside intervention by putting the baby’s head where the feet were the first run through each time you put them to bed† (Spook and Rottener 211). A partner educator of neurosurgery and pediatrics in the New York University Medical Center DRP. Jeffrey H. Astuteness, said â€Å"that since the ‘Back to Sleep’ crusade started, the head condition had gotten a pandemic. † Wisdom said â€Å"now we see up to twelve children per week with lopsided heads. â€Å"(Breaker). The Back to Sleep crusade which is driven by the PAP has been pushing to take care of kids since 1992. DRP. Astuteness expressed that â€Å"the PAP ought to make a superior Showing of advising guardians to turn babies 180 degrees in their dens periodically and to put them on their stomachs while they are alert, called belly time†(Breaker). Studies that have been directed at the Boston Children’s Hospital report, â€Å"that in the course of recent decades that babies who kick the bucket out of nowhere, and without clarification whose passing has been ascribed to KIDS-have contrasts in brainstem science that set them apart from newborn children biting the dust of other causes† (â€Å"Brainstem†). They are expressing that when these resting babies happen upon peril, they can't wake themselves up to expel themselves from risk. Analysts state that â€Å"these variations from the norm disable brainstem circuits that help control breathing, pulse, circulatory strain and temperature control during rest, this keeping dozing babies from animating when they delinquent an excessive amount of carbon dioxide because of poor ventilation or become over warmed due to over bundling† â€Å"Brainstem†). So with new data found on KIDS, specialists keep on encouraging guardians to play it safe, as not utilizing delicate sheet material, utilizing a pacifier, decent air ventilation and keep on taking care of children on their backs. Additionally in certain conditions there are still valid justifications for taking care of infants on stomach because of reflux. The Interiors school approach has been acclaimed as the most formatively proper model at present accessible. Maria Interiors first lady doctor in Italy, started this logical instruction for little youngsters with formative capacities, she proceeded to utilize this for ordinary kids. Testing over a time of years, she built up an enormous arrangement of articles which required continuously expanding measures of aptitude and development to control, after a kid aced one expertise, she was given the item that necessary the following more prominent measure of skill†(Spook and Rottener 516). There has been inquiries concerning the p resentation of Interiors understudies when they proceed onward to traditional scholastic settings. Since there are relatively few Interiors schools that offer kindergarten to twelfth grade numerous understudies need to move to state funded school. This is the place the issue starts a few understudies make some hard memories changing in accordance with the new learning condition where some exceed expectations and progress nicely. Research done in Milwaukee where they â€Å"tracked 400 understudies where a large portion of the understudies got government funded school and different Interiors before they progressed to state funded schools framework state that , Students who went to an Interiors school Preschool †Grade 5 and got Interiors instruction not just beat different understudies in math and science test scores, yet graduated with higher Gaps† (â€Å"Transitioning†). The negative side of this is when understudies enter government funded school â€Å"they might be behind or in front of their new friends in specific subjects in view of the independently directed examination they did. Ideas will be educated in an unexpected way, understudy should adjust to progressively customary instructing methods†(â€Å"Transitioning†). Then again Interiors understudies appreciate social, passionate and scholarly advantages from their training, making them dependable. â€Å"Remember this is a kid who has figured out how to realize, where to discover data all alone on the off chance that they need it. They are familiar with examine and handling new subjects† (â€Å"Quarter†). Numerous analysts alongside guardians accept that Interiors as an immense effect on kids long after the kid has left an Interiors school. Insides schools vary from customary school in a few different ways, â€Å"children are assembled in multi-age study hall from three to six, six to nine, nine to twelve, twelve to fifteen, and fifteen to eighteen† (Task). The age blend permits more seasoned understudies to be pioneers, coaches and help show exercises, more youthful children get the chance to encounter working with more seasoned cohorts. Simultaneously youthful understudies working close to more seasoned understudies get the chance to perceive what they will be taking a shot at sooner rather than later. The instructors work with dent’s one on one or in little gatherings. They fuel the fire in the child’s intrigue, â€Å"one educator noticed the children’s crave words, and they composed the same number of as they was already aware, and came to me for additional, having depleted their straightforward vocabulary’ (Task). Insides permits youngsters to develop in their normal improvement directing them as they develop into greater exercises. Subsequent to moving to a customary school is the place the issue starts, â€Å"the objectives and goals follow the school’s vision. â€Å"(Task) In customary homerooms educators have an allocated gathering of understudies and train understudies from appointed course books. Appraisals, test, worksheets are given to understudies to remember and there will never be a genuine learning experience. The customary school has their own vision for getting the hang of, obliging the states government sanctioned testing. Leaving the kids no time for their own formative figuring out how to develop, abandoning youngsters and lost in the learning procedure. Order is a progressing procedure. It starts from the get-go in a child’s life and changes as they develop, proceeding as self-restraint. DRP. Scare says, † that great guardians who normally lean toward severity should bring up their youngsters that way. Moderate triteness-in the feeling of requiring great habits, brief acquiescence, deliberateness isn't destructive to kids insofar as the guardians are fundamentally kind, thus long the kids are growing up glad and benevolent. In any case, severity is unsafe when guardians are tyrannical for a kid. This sort of seriousness produces kids who are tame and boring or intend to other people. â€Å"(Spook and Rottener 25) The Bible additionally states â€Å"Fathers, don't be so difficult on your youngsters, so their soul may not be broken† (Bible N. I. V. Colombians 3:21). Expecting sensible conduct from kids implies guardians need o be thoughtful, adoring, decently exacting, adaptable and have reliable desires. On the off chance that guardians learn right off the bat how to be firm and predictable, kids will have a simpler time coexisting with individuals. A few examinations show that guardians who dread teaching, have youngsters who experience the ill effects of being â€Å"insecure and create nervousness and stress when there is absence of reliable direction. Kids who don't learn proper limits when they are youthful experience trouble with poise later in life† (Brown). A parent’s solidness prepares the kid to coexist sensible with there individuals, so when they get out into the world regardless of at what age they won’t be in for an unexpected when others detest them for their self-centeredness and won’t experience life being disagreeable. Spook’s counsel was not all that not quite the same as the exhortation given now from numerous experts. Particularly, figuring out how to deal with kids was so significant for new families. That the schools guardians pick was significant for their children’s learning advancement. Furthermore, above all else how to bring up youngsters that are all around taught so they will act naturally controlled grown-ups with great relationship abilities. Macbeth, a play by Shakespeare

Macbeth, a play by Shakespeare Macbeth and Things Fall Apart Home›Literary Analysis Posts›Macbeth and Things Fall Apart Literary Analysis PostsMacbeth, a play by Shakespeare revolves around the character Macbeth the thane of Glamis who works out his ways to become king and tries to ward off any threat to his reign and succession by all means. In Chinua Achebe’s novel Things fall apart, Okonkwo, the main character, equally does everything to prove his valor. Though set in Scotland and Nigeria respectively, both Macbeth and Things fall apart subtly examine how too much ambition may break a man or propel him towards self-destruction.Macbeth’s ambition is, at the onset of the play, stirred up by the witches who meet him (with Baquo) in a desert while coming from a battle in which he had defeated the army os Norway which was supported by the thane of Cawdor. They hail Macbeth as the thane of Glamis and of Cawdor and predict that he will be king too. Coincidentally, as prophesied by the ‘three weird sisters†™, Macbeth later meets Ross who confirms to him that King Duncan has named him thane of Cawdor; this strengthens his resolve to go for greatness. In an aside that follows, Macbeth says that his greatest position comes after the present promotion. Banquo on his part is promised at his request that he will be happier and greater than Macbeth since he will be a father of kings: “Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none.”In Things fall apart, Okonkwo’s resolve to be great is driven by fear of not being like his late father Unoka. Achebe clearly states, “Perhaps down in his heart, Okonkwo was not a cruel man. But his whole life was dominated by fear … it was the fear of himself, lest he should be found to resemble his father” (9 10). Like Macbeth whose valor at war is demonstrated at the play’s onset when he defeats the invading armies of Norway and Ireland, Okonkwo’s fame is announced at the beginning of the novel. At the age of eighteen, he brings honor to his village by throwing Amalinze the Cat in a legendary duel. This among other achievements, not only earns him popularity but they also make him look down on underachievers. “He had no patience with unsuccessful men. He had no patience with his father (3).Unguarded personal ambition may lead to insensitivity and cruelty. Shakespeare apparently presents this view from what Macbeth (who is initially full of human kindness) does once his eyes are set on the crown. Though he had earlier said in an aside that “If chance will have him king, chance may crown him king,” Macbeth, persuaded by his wife, does not wait for chance to crown him king. In a letter to his wife, Lady Macbeth, Macbeth tells her to rejoice and not be ignorant of the promised greatness. To this promise she laments, in a soliloquy in Act I scene V, which the very kind nature of her husband may hold him from getting what fate and gods had bestowed upon him. She hopes to and succeeds in talking Macbeth into killing King Duncan when the king visits their castle. Macbeth’s murderous tendency and cruelty in pursuit of greatness are further demonstrated by the ruthless execution of the two chamberlains upon whom the daggers that killed Duncan are found. He attributes this inhuman act to his rage and fury.It is not, however, lost to the audience that Macbeth murders the two guards to conceal his treasonable act of murdering the king. He is probably aware that should it be suspected upon him, his ambition to succeed Duncan will come to naught.  In Things fall apart, Achebe exposes Okonkwo’s reckless insensitivity and cruelty.   He commits the unimaginable during the Week of Peace.   Okonkwo heavily beats his youngest wife, Ojiugo, for not returning early enough to cook the afternoon meal.   Ojiugo had gone to plait her hair at her friend’s house.   “In his anger, he had forgotten that it was the Week of Peace”(21). His two wives pleaded with him that it was the sacred week but he disregarded this si nce he is not known for stopping to beat someone half-way through.Ezeani, the priest of the earth goddess rebukes Okonkwo for disrespecting their gods and ancestors. Okonkwo displays the same recklessness during the New Yam Festival â€" an annual joyous occasion in Umuofia. He gives his second wife a sound beating for cutting a few leaves of bananas to wrap some food as it cooks. Okonkwo then asks Ikemefuna to bring him his gun with which he wants to venture out. The beaten wife innocently comments in a murmur about guns that had never killed anything (this is the case as the author had already observed that Okonkwo had not been lucky with the gun â€" he had not even killed a rat). In response to his wife’s observation, Okonkwo “ran madly into his room for the loaded gun, ran out again and aimed at her..” The woman luckily escapes unscathed. The   main characters in Macbeth and Things fall apart stop at nothing to realize their ambition.   Macbeth, having ascended to the throne , schemes to kill Banquo and his son Fleance.   He wants this done to ensure that the prophecy given to Banquo aborts. In Act III scene I, Macbeth   rues the fact that the witches hailed Banquo “father to a line of kings/ Upon my head they placed a fruitless crown.”   He thus declares Banquo his greatest enemy and hires murderers to kill him. Banquo is killed but his son Fleance escapes the murderer’s attack. Similarly, in his ambition to cut out an image of a fearless man, Okonkwo mercilessly kills Ikemefuna. Ikemefuna had been brought to Umuofia from Mbaino as a token of peace. An Umuofian woman had been killed in Mbaino and Ikemefuna and a virgin were the price they paid to avoid going to war with the aggrieved clan.   Ikemefuna had lived in Okonkwo’s homestead for three years and had known Okonkwo   as a father.   When the clan decided to kill Ikemefuna, Ezeudu warned Okonkwo, “ that boy calls you father.   Do not bear a hand in his death” (40).   Ikemefuna was led to the forest and when a man struck him by a matchet, Okonkwo “heard Ikemefuna cry, ‘my father, they have killed me!’ as he ran towards him. Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his matchet and cut him down. He was afraid of being thought weak”   (43). The rushed murder of the two chamberlains by Macbeth and the uncalled for killing of Ikemefuna by  Okonkwo prove that the two would do anything to be great. The writers of Macbeth and Things fall apart seem to agree that reckless ambition necessarily begets suffering.   At the killing of Banquo but not his son Fleance, Macbeth is dismayed to learn that the prophecy about Banquo still stands.     He observes that the murderers have scorched but not killed the snake.   This realization leads Macbeth to mental turbulence which he describes as a mind full of scorpions.   After Banquo’s death, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth begin to pay for their evil in their pursuit of ambition.   In Things fall apart, the killing of Ikemefuna by Okonkwo, lik e the death of Banquo for Macbeth, is the turning point for Okonkwo’s rising star.   His role in the death of the boy haunts him and he neither eats nor sleeps for two days. Nwoye, Okonkwo’s son later cites this incident as his reason for deserting his father for the white man’s religion.   In a manner of speaking, therefore, it is enough to conclude that the ghost of Ikemefuna, like that of Banquo comes back to punish Okonkwo. In the case of Macbeth, the sight of Banquo’s ghost shocks him and he queerly laments in the hearing of his guests though his wife tries to control the damage.   Okonkwo on his part broods alone and becomes a “shivering woman” (45). He wakes up in the middle of night and the mosquitoes “wailing near his right ear” could symbolize Ikemefuna’s ghost (53) .   And as fate would have it, Ikemefuna’s murder is followed by an accidental murder of a boy by Okonkwo at Ezeudu’s funeral. Ibo tradition demands that anyone who commits such a crime is punished. Okonkwo’s property is destroyed in keeping with the tradition and he is banished with his family from the clan for seven years. They move to Mbanta, Okonkwo’s mother’s birthplace. Evil begets evil as both Macbeth and Okonkwo suffer after inflicting pain and loss in others.Ambition without moral restraint leads to self-destruction.   This is evidently the case of both Macbeth and Okonkwo.   Macbeth, under pressure from being isolated by Macduff, desparately seeks out the witches for assurance.   He gets new prophecies that superficially soothe him.   Macduff also seeks the help of the King of England to dethrone Macbeth.   Banquo’s ghosts intensely haunt Macbeth and this heightens mental anguish. The witches warn Macbeth to be wary of Macduff but tell Macbeth that his kingdom will last until Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinane Hill.   He is also told that no one born of a woman will harm him.   All these developments leave Macbeth in a state of confusion.   In this state , when he learns of Macduff’s plot, Macbeth sends murders to kill Macduff’s wife and sons. The climax of Macbeth’s self destruction comes in Act 5.His wife develops a strange sleeping illness.   As he prepares to do battle with Macduff and Malcom, Macbeth fortifies his palace at Dunsinane Hill.   On the day of battle, the English and the Scottish army carry tree branches Birnam forest and march towards Dunsinane Hill. A scout informs Macbeth that the forest moves towards the palace but he defiantly fights himself to self- destruction insisting that he will die fighting.   Macduff whose birth was by what is commonly known as Caesarian eventually kills Macbeth. Thus in the manner of his death, the witches prophecies about the moving woods and the assassin not borne of a woman are fulfilled. It is the self-same prophesies that propel Macbeth to power leaving a trail of murders behind him. Interestingly, when Macbeth attempts to stop the predictions that do not favor him, he finds himself on the path to self-destruction.Okonkwo’s final journey self-destruction begins while in exile at Mbanta, his motherland.   He grows impatient with the people of Mbanta for allowing the white man to settle there.   He cannot tolerate the reasoning that their gods will fight for themselves and that there is no need fighting off the Christians for desecrating their religion. His argues, “Let us not reason like cowards…if a man comes into my hut and defecates on the floor, what do I do?   Do I shut my eyes? No I take a stick and break his head.   That is what a man does … This was a womanly clan, he thought such a thing could never happen in his fatherland Umuofia (113).It is with this mindset that Okonkwo returns to Umuofia and walks into his death.   He finds the white man well established in his clan.   He laments his being away for too long.   Nevertheless, he declares “We must fight these men and drive them from the land.”   (124)Okonkwo later leads his clansm en in destroying the Christian church at Umuofia. This achievement reignites his valor but his joy is short-lived when the white man arrests five other elders with him.   Okonkwo regrets not having killed the District Commissioner when he had summoned them. After they are released, Okonkwo attends clan meeting.   The white man’s messengers come to stop the meeting but Okonkwo stops them and chops off the head of one of them.   The meeting does not go on as he had expected it would. This kills his warrior spirit and tragically disillusions him. “He knew that Umuofia would not go to war. He knew because they had let the other messengers escape”   (144). In disappointment Okonkwo wipes his matchet and walks away. Shortly afterwards, his body is found dangling from a tree in a small bush behind his compound. Obierika ferociously accuses the District Commissioner for driving one of the greatest men in Umuofia to his to death and Okonkwo would now be buried like a dog. It is, howeve r, the pursuit of greatness that blindly drives both Macbeth and Okonkwo to their death. In conclusion, it is important to note that the two literary texts â€" Macbeth and Things fall apart, though written in different times and places address the inherent failings of humanity.   The greatest flaw of character evidently given prominence in the two works is the trait of unbridled ambition.   The main characters in both texts manifest such raw ambition that they end up being devoid of human feelings. For the two, the pursuit of self-actualization knows no moral or humanistic boundaries. Such a pursuit, Shakespeare and Achebe imply, ultimately leads to self-inflicted tragedy.

Angelou is a revolutionist who is known around the world for her astounding stories of racism, family, and overcoming adversity. Gun Control And Conceal Carry Legislature - 1244 Words

Gun control and conceal-carry legislature has long been a topic of debate that boasts complex arguments for both second amendment rights and general safety. A key component of gun control lies in the question of allowing personal firearms on college campuses. Emphasizing sexual assault, many campuses are reaching out to allow permit holders to carry concealed weapons. A study by the New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault found that one out of every four women will be the victim of sexual assault at some point in her academic career. Keep in mind that there is a significant under-representation of attacks as many sexual assaults go unreported. The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that the over 50% of rapes and sexual assaults†¦show more content†¦Colleges should not be allowed to take away your personal protection unless they can provide a truly safe environment for students. Sadly, most campuses can’t guarantee that assaults won’t occur, so people must be allowed to arm themselves for protection. While some schools have security or law enforcement, rarely can they reach the scene of an assault fast enough to prevent it. If the victim or a bystander has a self-defense weapon, there is a much greater possibility of stopping the attack. Attackers also avoid areas that allow firearms, and knowingly target places that don’t allow them. On October 9th, the Crime Prevention Research Center released a revised report showing that 92% of mass public shootings between January 2009 and July 2014 took place in gun-free zones. If college campuses nationwide reflected on the findings of this report, it would become apparent that allowing concealed weapons on campuses would significantly lower the odds of attacks occurring. Campuses that allow conceal carry are utilizing one of the biggest measures to deter assaults. According to John R. Eye Contact Free Essays

Most of us would not readily think that eye contact had anything to do with language, or a person’s culture. While researching a topic for this paper I came across an article on cultural differences that contained a section about eye contact. I found it to be very telling, as to the reasons for either the lack of, or the reasons for eye contact. We will write a custom essay sample on Eye Contact or any similar topic only for you Order Now The article of reference is â€Å"Cultural Differences? Or, Are we really that different? † ( Gregorio Billikoph). This article discusses the differences in cultures, or the different ways in which these cultures relate to others, and how some words or expressions may not make sense to another culture. One example of this is using the phrase â€Å"thank you†. In the U. S. , we thank everyone for just about everything we do, but in the Chinese culture, for example, will only thank someone if the task being preformed is something very important. Although this article touches on a variety of cultural differences, I found the idea of eye contact very interesting. In this article the writer, who is of Hispanic origin, talks about his own strong need for eye contact. He explains that his wife has come to realize that when he is talking to her, she needs to stop what she is doing and make eye contact with him, or he will stop talking until she does. He goes on to say that poor eye contact is â€Å"partially due to shyness or how sake a person feels around others† (pg 5). As I stated in the beginning, eye contact may not seem to be part of our language. On this I would have to disagree, because I think without eye contact, communication is very difficult. Consider this; you are having a conversation with someone who speaks English only as a second language, and has some difficulty with some phrases. While talking to this person, he or she is looking anywhere but at you, do you think this person fully understands what you are saying, or are they feeling embarrassed because they are having difficulty understanding you? If you and this person were talking and maintaining eye contact, you would be able to see by your companion’s expressions whether or not you were being understood. There are of course other reasons for lack of eye contact. Some may feel that they are inferior to you, or they may be shy or withdrawn. I have been in situations where eye contact made me very uncomfortable. For me, there are those whose eye contact is so intense, I am forced to look away for a bit because it makes me feel violated, like they are looking too deep into me. Then there are those times when talking to a man, where I feel they are trying to attract my attention to them for different reasons I am not interested in. I believe that eye contact is important, but it seems to me that times have changed in that area to some extent. Why? Again it comes down to how your eye contact is perceived. I have been in situations when talking to someone of the opposite sex, and their wife or girlfriend gets the idea that I am interested in their man because of eye contact. I also had the issue with my ex-husband. He did not like me talking to other men period, because he felt that my eye contact with them meant that I was interested in them. It is very difficult to avoid all eye contact when talking to others, so I was always uncomfortable talking to men when in the presence of my ex- husband. I think that when it comes to eye contact in any culture. Or when dealing with anyone in general, we need to be aware of how that eye contact will be perceived by others. We all need to educate ourselves as much as possible, regarding cultural differences in order to help avoid some of the negative effects our actions could cause. Internet Regulation Essays (1290 words) - Pornography Law

Internet Regulation The Internet is a method of communication and a source of information that is becoming more popular among those who are interested in, and have the time to surf the information superhighway. The problem with this much information being accessible to this many people is that some of it is deemed inappropriate for minors. The government wants censorship, but a segment of the population does not. Legislative regulation of the Internet would be an appropriate function of the government. The Communications Decency Act is an amendment which prevents the information superhighway from becoming a computer "red light district." On June 14, 1995, by a vote of 84-16, the United States Senate passed the amendment. It is now being brought through the House of Representatives.1 The Internet is owned and operated by the government, which gives them the obligation to restrict the materials available through it. Though it appears to have sprung up overnight, the inspiration of free-spirited hackers, it in fact was born in Defense Department Cold War projects of the 1950s.2 The United States Government owns the Internet and has the responsibility to determine who uses it and how it is used. The government must control what information is accessible from its agencies. This material is not lawfully available through the mail or over the telephone, there is no valid reason these perverts should be allowed unimpeded on the Internet. Since our initiative, the industry has commendably advanced some blocking devices, but they are not a substitute for well-reasoned law.4 Because the Internet has become one of the biggest sources of information in this world, legislative safeguards are imperative. The government gives citizens the privilege of using the Internet, but it has never given them the right to use it. They seem to rationalize that the framers of the constitution planned & plotted at great length to make certain that above all else, the profiteering pornographer, the pervert and the pedophile must be free to practice their pursuits in the presence of children on a taxpayer created and subsidized computer network.3 People like this are the ones in the wrong. Taxpayer's dollars are being spent bringing obscene text and graphics into the homes of people all over the world. The government must take control to prevent pornographers from using the Internet however they see fit because they are breaking laws that have existed for years. Cyberpunks, those most popularly associated with the Internet, are members of a rebellious society that are polluting these networks with information containing pornography, racism, and other forms of explicit information. When they start rooting around for a crime, new cybercops are entering a pretty unfriendly environment. Cyberspace, especially the Internet, is full of those who embrace a frontier culture that is hostile to authority and fearful that any intrusions of police or government will destroy their self-regulating world.5 The self-regulating environment desired by the cyberpunks is an opportunity to do whatever they want. The Communications Decency Act is an attempt on part of the government to control their "free attitude" displayed in homepages such as "Sex, Adult Pictures, X-Rated Porn", "Hot Sleazy Pictures (Cum again + again)" and "sex, sex, sex. heck, it's better even better than real sex"6. "What we are doing is simply making the same laws, held constitutional time and time again by the courts with regard to obscenity and indecency through the mail and telephones, applicable to the Internet."7 To keep these kinds of pictures off home computers, the government must control information on the Internet, just as it controls obscenity through the mail or on the phone. Legislative regulations must be made to control information on the Internet because the displaying or distribution of obscene material is illegal. The courts have generally held that obscenity is illegal under all circumstances for all ages, while "indecency" is generally allowable to adults, but that laws protecting children from this "lesser" form are acceptable. It's called protecting those among us who are children from the vagrancies of adults.8 The constitution of the United States has set regulations to determine what is categorized as obscenity and what is not. In Miller vs. California, 413 U.S. at 24-25, the court announced its "Miller Test" and held, at 29, that its three part test constituted "concrete guidelines to isolate 'hard core' pornography from expression protected by the First Amendment.9 By laws previously set by the government, obscene pornography should not be accessible on the Internet. The government must police the Internet because people are breaking laws. "Right now, cyberspace is like a neighborhood without a police department."10 Currently anyone can put anything he wants on the Internet with no penalties. "The Communications Decency Act gives law enforcement new tools to prosecute those who would use a computer to make the equivalent

lemon v kurtzman 1971 essays

lemon v kurtzman 1971 essays The name of the case is Lemon v. Kurtzman; the Chief Justice in charge of the case was Warren Burger. The case was argued on March 3, 1971 and decided on June 28, 1971. These three cases from Pennsylvania and Rhode Island involved public assistance to private schools, some of which were religious. Pennsylvania's law included paying the salaries of teachers in parochial schools, assisting the purchasing of textbooks, and other teaching supplies. In Rhode Island, the State paid 15% of the salaries of private school teachers. A federal court upheld the Pennsylvania law while a District Court ruled that the Rhode Island law fostered 'excessive entanglement'. The case is about actions challenging constitutionality of state aid to, or for the benefit of, nonpublic schools. A three-judge United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island said that the Rhode Island statute was unconstitutional, while a three-judge United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, dismissed the complaint that challenged the Pennsylvania statute, and appeals were taken. The Supreme Court, Chief Justice Burger, held that both statutes, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, were unconstitutional under the religion clauses of the First Amendment. The Courts decision was unanimous 8-0; it determined that the case was unconstitutional. The decision stated that there are three criteria that should be used to assess legislation: "First, the statute must have a secular legislative purpose; second, its principal or primary effect must be one that neither advances or inhibits religion; finally, the statute must not foster and excessive government Entanglement with religion." The teachers whose salaries are partially being paid by the State are religious agents who work under the rule of religious officials. There is an innate conflict in this situation of which the state should remain clear. To guarantee that tea ...

What is knowledge Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

What is knowledge - Essay Example Diverse methodological approaches and various working definitions of knowledge has further created confusions. While knowledge management might yet be able to be claimed to a coherent scientific paradigm, recent publications indicate an increased conceptual and methodological rigor is needed to establish knowledge management as recognized scholarly discipline. The emergence of research and practical information on aspects of managing knowledge indicates that knowledge management is more than the latest management fad. Epistemology, the study of knowledge, has a log honorable tradition in philosophy, starting with early Greek philosophers. Questions such as†what do we know?† and â€Å"what does it mean to say that someone know something?† have been discussed in philosophical literature. The idea of a formal logical analysis of reasoning about knowledge is somewhat more recent, but goes back at least to Von Wright’s work in the early 1950’s.the first book-length treatment of epistemic logic- the logic of knowledge- is Hintikka’s seminal work knowledge and belief, which appeared in 1962. More recently, researchers in such diverse fields as economics, linguistics, AI (artificial intelligence), and theoretical computer science has become interested in reasoning about knowledge. While, of course, some of the issues that concerned the philosophers have been of interest to these researchers as well, the focus of attention has shifted. For one thing, there are pragmatic concerns about the relationship between knowledge and action. It may seem, what ever the merits of a metaphysical description of the world, that knowledge itself cannot be one of its objects, for knowledge is of the world, or not at least not only in the world. But there is nothing that is not in the world. The supposition that there is, in this case, is largely due to a picturesque conception of the self and a related conception of knowledge which have dominated most of continental philosophy at least since Fichte, although Hume warned against them in 1739.they may be

Basic Critical Thinking Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Basic Critical Thinking - Essay Example The European debt crisis is one of the most critical financial huddles encountered by the global economy, but the problem is also perhaps the hardest to appreciate. The global economy has undergone slow growth since the financial crisis of 2008, which revealed the unsound fiscal policies of European countries and other countries across the globe (Rushe, 2012). Greece, which engaged in vigorous spending for years, was unable to institute financial reforms; thus was one of the initial countries to suffer the consequences of weak growth. This problem is relevant to the modern financial world since it reveals how slow growth causes slow tax incomes, resulting in exceedingly high and unsustainable budget deficits. The magnitude of the problem became evident as Greece announced that the country’s debts exceeded the entire size of its economy. In order to curtail the European debt crisis, the European Union established a series of bailouts for the troubled economies, beginning with the 2010 110 billion Euro bailout for Greece, and subsequent bailouts for Ireland and Portugal in 2010 and 2011, respectively (Lynn, 2010). The EU and IMF establishe d a debt restructuring strategy for the countries experiencing debt issues. However, the action plan moved quite slowly because the EU requires consent from all union members before dispatching bailouts to troubled countries. It is hence critical that the EU develops effective and timely strategies to assist its member countries recover from the debt crisis. The problem essentially concerns European countries’ inability to pay off their debts, owing to their dwindling economic capabilities. The boundaries of the problem situation are essentially the bounds of the European Union, and some of the most viable alternatives include seeking financial assistance from the international community so as to bail out all countries affected by the debt crisis. The greatest advantage

Antibacterial Soap Essay -- Critical Thinking Essays

Antibacterial Soap Dial antibacterial soap advertises that it is "over 10x more effective at killing disease-causing germs than ordinary liquid hand soaps"(1). To the average consumer a soap with the ability to kill more germs seems to be more effective. But is a more powerful antibacterial soap always better? Various studies suggest that antibacterial soaps can be harmful and may lead to problems like super bugs, dry skin, and hand eczema. According to current research antibacterial soaps are no better than traditional soaps when it comes to house hold use. Antibacterial cleaning agents have fast become a popular alternative to traditional cleaning products. These soaps, shampoos, dishwashing detergents, and toothpastes are marketed as antibacterial products and have become popular household items. In fact 75% of liquid soaps and 30% of bar soaps on the market are considered antibacterial(2). These antibacterial products are so popular because they are intended to decrease bacteria. They wipe out more germs than regular soap. This means that they should decrease a person's chance of getting sick. As Janet Donohue of www.germsmart.com suggests "they kill germs, thus breaking the cycle of infection"(3). In addition to killing germs some antibacterial products are easier to use than traditional soap and water. For example, there are many hand sanitizers that do not require water. A user simply applies the soap to his hands and the dirt "disappears". These products seem magic, but as we know magic does not exist in science. To fully understand how antibacterial products work one must learn how soap works. Soap consists of an acid and a base(4). The acid known as triglycerides mixes with the base sodium hyd... ...than trying to wipe bacteria out we should work on limiting our exposure to too many harmful bacteria with traditional soaps, shampoos, dish detergents, and toothpaste. Since even before President Barrack Obama’s

Since even before President Barrack Obama’s first day in office, all eyes have been on him as a bastion of change and a way to get out of the economic conundrum America has gotten itself into. While the most recent presidents would have focused on the economy and how to revamp it, President Obama has taken the old school approach of fellow Democrat and former President Kennedy had employed during his term. His was a call to the whole population of America as well as to the leaders who direct its course – a call for action at the grassroots level of the country, while trying to shed light on his achievements and the direction he wants for Wall Street, Main Street and the whole country (Shear & Branigin).President Obama’s speech focused on the â€Å"irresponsibility and poor decision-making† of America’s institutions and individual attitudes, labeling greed and quick-profits as the culprits to the economic wreck (â€Å"Full Text† par 6).He blame s the mismanagement of the bigwigs of Wall Street trickling down to its rank and file memebers, the people’s wanton will to spend, and the insufficient policies of the government against the greedy behavior of the financial institutions (ibid par 3-7). He claims that these factors were the ones that started the domino-effect recession of America and affecting other countries’ economies as well. The case-in-point in his speech is that people should be more responsible and disciplined – not to live beyond their means and keep on spending and borrowing, but rather to get back to the basic values of saving and investing, and exporting rather than importing (ibid par 35).He believes that it is about time to lay down â€Å"a new foundation for growth and prosperity†¦built upon five pillars that will grow our economy and make this new century another American century† (ibid par 35-36). His vision is to have America continue as the world’s foremost nat ion in all aspects, especially economically, and bring back the trust of other nations. While he lamented about Wall Street’s and the financial corporate mogul’s attempts at gaining riches fast (therefore, costing them the future), he laid out his current plans and his plans for the future, though without detail. It was easy to get lost in the speech owing to the many things the President wants done in his term.It was like trying to solve every single problem that has plagued every past administration in one go. This is not to say that he’s bitten off more than he can chew and that he’s going to barf all of it in a matter of moments, that is a matter that only the future can say. What his speech suggests, however, is that the multitude of reforms that he envisions for America is not only a rebuilding of a rock-solid foundation, but also of renovating (though, I believe, not rebuilding as some critics would adamantly point out) the entire house. For sure, the speech has put to light many concerns that the country has had for the longest time, and Whitehouse believes that quick fixes, like those done in administrations past, are not enough to stop a roof from leaking when the storms come, much less get swept away by the winds and floods (Seib).Whether the president’s visions of a stronger America altogether remains to be seen, and, as the speech says, it depends on the people acting whether they can make things happen or not (â€Å"Full Text† par 61-62). A review of his speech tells us that it is up to the government to initiate reforms, but it is up to the people to reform themselves and help the government make the economic surgery a successful one.The speech has given people a new insight on America’s current economic situation (perhaps with the exception of his critics, opponents and those who reviled his act of covering Jesus’ name) that many are seeing the issue in a different light other than just point ing a finger at Wall Street.

Italian Book Club Linguality - Parallel Text

Reading Italian literature can be demanding for non-native speakers. Frequently referring to a dictionary becomes tedious, and, unless you wear blinders, resorting to the parallel-text version (Italian and English side-by-side) of a particular work becomes an exercise in futility as you try to avert your eyes from the English translation. With the constant safety net of an English translation just a glance away, its difficult to commit your brain to the exclusive task of absorbing Italian. Fortunately, theres a new way to read recently published Italian fiction and nonfiction almost as effortlessly as reading books in English—the Linguality Italian Book Club. Italian Literature? Ma, Oui!Linguality, based in Cambridge, MA, was founded by a team with extensive experience in foreign-language publishing, university teaching, and pedagogical research. Linguality’s French Book Club debuted in 2007 and quickly earned accolades from readers and language experts alike. Six times a year, contemporary French books are republished with an English introduction, extensive English glossaries, and author interviews in French on audio CD. Given the success of that venture, the company decided to branch out, and launched an Italian Book Club. No Dictionary RequiredThe innovation in Lingualitys Italian Book Club series is the format. The original foreign-language text is placed on every right-hand page, and an extensive English glossary, on the opposite page, allows readers to see the definition of bolded words in context. When the first selection was released, Walter Veltroni, renowned Italian author, journalist, former Italian Minister of Cultural Heritage, and former mayor of Rome, proclaimed that: Its the literary equivalent of a subtitled movie! In fact, the glossary entries act more like turbocharged subtitles, boosting readers comprehension and vocabulary. Typically there are over 2,000 entries per book defining every difficult word and expression, eliminating the need for a dictionary. As Lingualitys publisher, Wes Green, says: ...a non-fluent speaker doesnt need a complete translation...or a dictionary. He or she just opens the book and starts reading in the foreign language. Italian Book Club Membership Has PrivilegesAnother advantage of the Linguality Italian Book Club is that all books are complete, unedited texts—the original version that native Italians read too. Subscribers also receive an audio CD with a 30- to 45-minute conversation in Italian with the author, including a transcript with glossary of the dialogue as an appendix in the book. The publisher recommends that readers have completed the equivalent of two years of college Italian. While each title is amply annotated, beginners may still find it difficult to contend with the texts. With their specially annotated editions of Italian books, the Linguality Italian Book Club offers a unique method for those looking to dramatically improve their Italian language skills. Instead of waiting for the English version of a popular Italian book (few foreign-language titles are ever translated into English anyway), Italian language learners can take off the blinders and read the original without having to resort to the dictionary. Italian Book ListA subscription to Lingualitys Italian Book Club includes six hard-bound books with author interviews on CD. Titles in the series include: Va dove ti porta il cuore (Follow Your Heart) by Susanna Tamaro La scoperta dellalba (The Discovery of the Dawn) by Walter Veltroni Mamma Mia! by Fabrizio Blini Nel momento (In an Instant) by Andrea De Carlo LOrda (The Hoard) by Gian Antonio Stella Il buio e il miele (The Darkness and the Honey) by Giovanni Arpino

The War I And World War II Essay - 1639 Words

The â€Å"Thirty Years War† World War I and World War II are the largest military conflicts in history. In 1919, Europe attempted to reconstruct the damage left by WWI. After WWI, with the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was left destroyed and destabilized, which eventually laid out the foundation for WWII. The harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles led to the aggression of Germany. The Treaty of Versailles was supposed to bring about peace, but Marshall Foch, generalissimo of the Allied Armies in France believed that instead, it was an armistice for twenty years. The causes of WWII can easily be traced back to the unresolved issues of WWI, thus bringing about the idea of the â€Å"Thirty Years War.† WWII is the second half of a longer â€Å"Thirty Years War because the first half, or WWI, caused economic instability, disintegration of the European order, political and social unrest and psychological damage. The causes of WWII were aggression of Germany and the appeasement that attempted to deal with th e aggression, failure of the League of Nations, collapse of three major Empires, Germany’s repudiation of the Treaty of Versailles, and the Great Depression. Ultimately, these causes can be traced back to the unresolved issues of WWI. My Last Prediction By Tom Sawyer - 2383 Words

Week 1- Character or settings prediction After briefly evaluating the page cover and reading a couple pages of the book, I’ve formulated three predictions for this novel. The first prediction is that the main character, Tom Sawyer, will be a nuisance to many individuals in the book. By observing the book cover, I noticed the word adventure which frequently when this term is used; it can be intertwined with mischief and rebellious behavior. My second prediction is that Tom will have to sustain many tribulations throughout the story line. This is based off of my first prediction; mischief is usually the outcome from a fixed amount of suffering and/or distress. I also observed Tom without any shoes in a variety of pictures (some off of Google), so I assume he either is living in modest poverty, or experiences small amounts of child labor at his residence. My last prediction is that Tom will eventually develop a relationship with a relatable friend he will meet. This belief is due to my prior knowledge from Mark Twain n ovels. After my reading Most of my predictions were somewhat accurate. Tom Sawyer is identified as a troublemaker who defies the role of his aunt. His mother has passed away (which could be a source for his mischief.) I have yet to see any close relationship to another in the few chapters I have read. Tom Sawyer does sustain work as a punishment for his mischief because his aunt does not have the heart to hit him. Week#1: Literary Luminary â€Å"The Great Gatsby† Chapter 1/2 â€Å"You look at him sometimes when he thinks nobody’s looking. I’ll bet he killed a man. † (Fitzgerald 44) -This passage shows the thoughts that run among all of Gatsby’s guests. We will write a custom essay sample on Literary Luminary or any similar topic only for you Order Now Who is he? Where did he come from? Gatsby has set himself up to a lot of questions and a lot of suspense. â€Å"He smiled understandingly- much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of reassurance in it that you may come across four or five times in life. (Fitzgerald 48) -This passage showcases the attraction people have towards Gatsby. While they may not know much about him, they are drawn into him by his friendliness and charm. This is something that Nick thinks is special about Gatsby. â€Å"Some time toward midnight Tom Buchanan and Mrs. Wilson stood face to face discussing in impassioned voices whether Mrs. Wilson had any right to mention Daisy’s name. â€Å"Daisy! Daisy! Daisy! † shouted Mrs. Wilson â€Å"I’ll say it whenever I want to! Daisy! Dai—-† Making a short deft movement Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand. (Fitzgerald 37) -This passage shows us the how society treated woman back in tho se days almost as if they didn’t have their own freedom of speech, the situation however was treated differently because of the fact that Mrs. Wilson seemed to openly say her name without any thought that her actions might have consequences. In today’s society if one was to break a lady’s nose for screaming out the name of a flower, they might be put into something as extreme as a mental asylum. It’s interesting to portray these two different arguments because we must contrast events that go on today and back then. People’s moral standards nowadays are so very low. Relationships aren’t truthful, the way everyone dresses is bizarre, and the way others speak is wrong. In the book, Tom Buchanan takes Nick to his â€Å"girl†, even though he’s already married, and she dresses strange. In the book it says, â€Å"‘We’re getting off,’ he insisted. â€Å"I want you to meet my girl. † (Fitzgerald 24). No one stays true to their values anymore, because, like Tom, they do whatever they want. -Nick goes to Gatsby’s party, one of the only guests that come that were actually invited. -A huge orchestra was there. Jordan Baker is there, along with seemingly everyone in West Egg. This means Gatsby is very rich, considering he is able to supply food for all the people. Chapter 3 (food for thought) Also, in all of chapter 3 people are partying and gossiping. This definitely happens a lot today, especially in high school. They gossiped about Gatsby when someone said, â€Å"Somebody told me they thought he killed a man once (Fitzgerald 44). † Most of the people at the party are also not invited, which also happens at a lot of high school parties today. â€Å"†¦ I was one of the few guests who had actually been invited. People were not invited—they went there (Fitzgerald 41). â€Å" How to cite Literary Luminary, Essay examples

Does God Exist Essay Research Paper Does free essay sample

Does God Exist? Essay, Research Paper Does God Exist? St. Thomas Aquinas has written several of import plants. Some of them are: The Disputed Questions on the Power of God, Exposition of Dionysius on the Divine Names and Disputed Questions on Spiritual Creatures. Most of Aquinas # 8217 ; s plants have been written to seek to turn out the being of God. Aquinas has been a house truster that everything had to hold a Godhead and the lone possible solution would be something called God. It is with this thought that Aquinas # 8217 ; s Third Way was written. In his De aeternitate mundi Contra murmurantes, Aquinas insists that human ground can non turn out the impossibleness of an everlastingly created existence. Once once more Aquinas has written with the certainty that God has to be in order to hold created the existence. There is no uncertainty in Aquinas # 8217 ; s mind that everything was created for a ground and that ground was God # 8217 ; s will. In the text Medieval Philosophy, St. Thomas Aquinas # 8217 ; article entitled Does God Exist? , Aquinas tries to demo the different stairss that can turn out God does be and that the universe had to hold been created by God. This article is comprised of five different ways in which Aquinas tries to turn out that we can be sure that God exists. In the 3rd manner, Aquinas tries to demo that God exists if it is true that we exist. In the article Aquinas says that it is possible for things to be and for them non to be. He means that populating things will one twenty-four hours go non- populating things. Aquinas believes that all things can non be mortal because if it were true, so at some point nil would be. What he means is if all things were populating things, intending that they had to be mortal, so at some clip these things must besides go non-existing. Aquinas says that if everything were mortal, so nil could be bing at present, because what is nonexistent Begins to be merely through something which already exists. This can be translated to intend that if all mortal things have to halt bing so there can # 8217 ; t be anything which exists today. Aquinas believes that it takes a life presence to assist make other unrecorded things in order for them to populate besides. This means that there must hold been something which existed through infinity to assist make living things which exist today. Aquinas believes that something had to hold created life throughout clip in order for things to be populating today. He says this thing must hold existed from the beginning and that it must still be now. His belief is that populating things and inanimate things have lived through infinity with the aid of a higher, more powerful presence. He besides says that if it were true that nil existed at one clip, so it would be impossible for anything to get down to be once more, intending nil could be now, which is evidently false. What he means by this is that it takes a life presence to assist make other living things. It is impossible for anyone to logically believe that things such as stones, trees, and H2O can be without at that place being a Godhead. It is for this ground that Aquinas believes that God was the lone thing that existed so, so hence he must hold been the 1 who created everything. This theory does turn out that something had to be from the beginning. The job I did happen with this theory is that it doesn # 8217 ; t turn out that God exists but that something existed. What I mean by this is Aquinas calls this thing God but he doesn # 8217 ; t turn out that it # 8217 ; s the # 8216 ; God # 8217 ; that people believe to be. Most people would hold that God is something more personal than Aquinas # 8217 ; theory of God. The image of God is interpreted otherwise by many people, although most of these people would hold that God must be all knowing, truthful, honest, loving, patient, forgiving and ageless. The all knowing and loving God is non the same as Aquinas # 8217 ; God because Aquinas merely proved that God was something space. Aquinas # 8217 ; theory does non turn out that God is patient, loving, or forgiving which is what God is believed to intend to most people. The image people have of God doesn # 8217 ; t merely halt at being our Godhead. Another job which I found while reading Aquinas # 8217 ; article is that it doesn # 8217 ; t explicate Darwinian theories. Darwinians base their theory on development. Darwinians believe that God doesn # 8217 ; t exist but that all life things have evolved through nature. The thought of development and germinating from nature agencies that there could non hold been a Godhead but that one molecule started the procedure of development. This theory can # 8217 ; t be really be disputed in Aquinas # 8217 ; 3rd manner because he merely uses the word God to intend Godhead. Darwinians could state that the first molecule could besides be called # 8220 ; God # 8221 ; if people wished, although it wouldn # 8217 ; t be the signifier of God Christians believe in. In both theories, Aquinas # 8217 ; and Darwin # 8217 ; s, infinite arrested development is used. Both of these theories lead to different thoughts of where bing things came from. Aquinas 3rd manner has some little jobs which can be argued by atheists and Orthodox Christians. I agree with what Aquinas had to state in his 3rd manner to be true. I believe that it must be true because all things must hold had a Godhead. While talking to an Anglican curate, I learned that he besides agreed in Aquinas # 8217 ; theory because he was taught that the inquiry would still remain of who created the molecule. The inquiry will ever stay how did God evolve. I can non reply this inquiry but Aquinas # 8217 ; theory has helped me understand the procedure of life things and I is no longer doubt that God is space. The Rainmaker, A Persuasive Paper Essays - English-language Films

The Rainmaker, a persuasive paper John Grisham's "The Rainmaker," a novel and now a movie by Francis Ford Copolla. It is the sixth novel to film adaptation of Grisham's novels and is by far one of the more accomplished. The courtroom drama reveals the ordeals of a young lawyer and associate entering the world of money hungry company's scams. "They were totally unqualified to try the case of a life time, but every underdog has his day" Let's talk about silk purses and sow's ears. Let's talk about John Grisham's The Rainmaker. Or, as the movie company would have it, John Grisham's The Rainmaker. That's the official title of the film Francis Ford Coppola has made from Mr. Grisham's best-selling novel. Thankfully, John Grisham's The Rainmaker is a better movie than Mr. Grisham's tension-challenged novel. Mr. Coppola may be doing this for the payday (in order to finance his next original film), but he manages to elevate Mr. Grisham's overblown story into a passably entertaining courtroom drama which, unlike the book, actually has some drama. The story remains about the same. A neophyte lawyer, Rudy Baylor (Matt Damon), winds up working at a low-rent law firm when he can find no other job after finishing law school in Memphis, Tenn. The only thing he has going for him is an insurance case: a young man, dying of leukemia, who has been wrongfully denied a bone-marrow transplant by his insurance company. But getting that case to court will be like running the high-hurdles with his feet cut off. For starters, Rudy has no trial experience -- and the insurance company has the high-powered Leo Drummond (Jon Voight) and three or four of his assistants for the defense. Even as he is preparing for the trial, Rudy is getting involved in another kind of case. While hunting for clients at a local hospital, he spots a young woman (Claire Danes) who has been beaten by her husband. He befriends her; by film's end, he is emotionally involved with her in an effort to get her out of this abusive marriage. Mr. Coppola, who adapted the novel for his screenplay, understands that Mr. Grisham created a story in which the end is never in doubt. While hewing to the novel's basic plot, the director turns the courtroom story into more of a roller-coaster ride. He draws a skillful and sympathetic performance out of Mr. Damon as Rudy. He also gives Mr. Voight the best villain role he's played this year (and he's played a bunch of them): a sleek, shark-like lawyer who doesn't need to twitch or overact to show off the power he trades in. The rest of the cast is equally strong, from Mary Kay Place as the tough-minded mother of the stricken victim, to Danny DeVito as Rudy's assistant, a would-be attorney who has failed the bar six times and refers to himself as ''a paralawyer.'' Even the usually self-indulgent Mickey Rourke makes a good showing as Rudy's oily boss. The Rainmaker isn't a great movie, but it's an involving and compelling one. Given the weakness of the short material, that's nothing short of miraculous.

The Problem of Evil Rational, Reasonable, and Scientific Explains

The Problem of Evil Rational, Reasonable, and Scientific Explains Introduction As a philosophical issue, dealing with the Problem of Evil is fundamentally a matter of refining definitions. It means that the apparent contradiction between the existence of Go3d and the presence of Evil should be dissolves. It is important to consider those natures differently, do not try to create opposition between them. God is a rational being who acts in accordance with reason.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Problem of Evil: Rational, Reasonable, and Scientific Explains specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Peter van Inwagens defense left evil without attention and focused instead on modifying the God terms. This helps consider the world from the point of view of its creation by God as not a spiritual being, but as rational being who acts in accord with reason. God exists and he possesses the unique characteristics of omniscience, omnipotence, and omnibenevolence and to understand why evil exists. Problem of Evil The problem of evil is depicted in the following statement: If Go3d exists then how is it possible for evil to be present in the world. Being omniscient, omnipotent, and omnibenevolent, Go3d has the capacity to eliminate all cases of evil and provide happiness and goodness for all. It is possible to state that the existence of evil in the world helps us understand what happiness and goodness truly are. This influence human reasoning and is based on the opposition of these notions. Only having cognized what evil is, people are able to distinguish goodness. God’s characteristic features are aimed at helping people who have experienced evil to know what good. Only God’s omniscience, omnipotence, and omnibenevolence help him do what he has done, namely create this world. Omnipotence of God God is omnipotent and it is impossible to reject it under the statements of evil’s presence. There are a lot of different reasons which can support this idea. Def ining the notion of the omnipotence of God, Peter van Inwagen points to the fact that we do not know what exactly God can do, we are just aware of the fact that he can. That is all. To prove God’ omnipotence, it is possible to implement the following examples. All people could have spoken German if they had lived in Germany. All people could have played golf, if their lives had been connected to this kind of sport. God can do this, but there is a natural question, what for?Advertising Looking for essay on philosophy? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More For what purpose would one speak German if he/she did not use it in everyday life? Why should one overburden his/her brain? Is it just for the reason that God CAN do it? All God does is reasonable and can be explained. God is unable to create a world where everything is good, as it contradicts the idea of personal choice and the understanding of goodness. As it has been mentioned above, if people did not experience bad things they would not know what goodness is. Therefore, people are the source of evil. The very understanding that God can do whatever he wants shows that he is omnipotent. This description leads to the conclusion that God can either do something or not to do it. Reason is the main tool God should be guided by as he can do it and he does it in the way how it must be and as a result, correct. God’s reason is based on omnibenevolence, which human reasoning is based on choice. Being omnibenevolent, God is unable on bad actions, thus, the nature of evil is a human being. Omniscience of God God is omniscient. The definition of omniscience presupposes that a person is omniscient when he/she knows for sure the main idea of the proposition and this person cannot have the false considerations. Omniscience of God is explained by the fact that those who have always behaved in a good manner in the relation to others are going to be r ewarded. This idea may be tried to be contradicted by the fact that the freedom of choice of human life rejects God’s omniscience. It means that if a human being has an opportunity to choose a life style, God is unable to know what is going to happen. But, having predicted that God is omniscient, it is possible to say that he is able to predict a choice of a human being. This characteristic feature should be connected with God’s omnipotence as an ability to do everything.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Problem of Evil: Rational, Reasonable, and Scientific Explains specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More God knows everything and he offers people the right to choose not as the hidden ability to guide human choice, but as the confirmation of the fact that God knows everything, and he is aware what choice a person will make. Sometimes, human choice is directed at the evil side, but God’s noninterferen ce is explained by the freedom of choice and the cognition of evil with the purpose to understand what goodness is. This is the main reason why God does not interfere into human decisions, as they will still come to the understanding of goodness. Omnibenevolence of God Omnibenevolent nature of God should not also be questioned as God has created this world with the purpose to give us life, but it is we are who make choice and act in opposition to God’s reasoning. God offers us the right to choose what exactly we want, therefore, he is not responsible for the choice people make. He can influence us and help us make choice according to his omnipotent nature and he can be aware of the choice made by people as he is omniscient, but, he offers the choice for people. It is their decision how to act. This does not point to evil existence and does not violate the problem of evil from the point of view of the inability to influence human choice if wrong decision is made. God is omnibe nevolent because his actions are directed at the goodness and human happiness. Everything he creates has its purpose, but, it is human choice whether to use that goodness or not. Thus, it can be concluded that the God’s omniscience, omnipotence, and omnibenevolence cannot be the reason of the problem of evil as these notions are not connected. Personal argument Having stated that problem and having considered it from the point of view of the problem of evil, we came to the conclusion that to define God, it is important to use the following features, omniscience, omnipotence, and omnibenevolence. Having discussed there issues we have managed to prove them and point to the fact that they cannot be used as the contradiction to God’s existence within the problem of evil. In other words, we have stated that the problem of evil does not go along with God’s definition as evil presence in the world is an obligatory issue and it does not rejects omniscient, omnipotent, a nd omnibenevolent nature of God.Advertising Looking for essay on philosophy? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Conclusion Therefore, it should be concluded that the problem of evil can be explained via rational, reasonable, and scientific. Gods characteristics of omniscience, omnipotence, and omnibenevolence are not undermined. The existence of evil is obsolete in relation to the existence of God as all-knowing, all-powerful, and all-good. There is no place to the evil problem as the existence of evil does not reject the presence of God. These notions are to be present together in order to show people what goodness is. Furthermore, the presence of evil in the world does not reject God’s omniscience, omnipotence, and omnibenevolence as these notions should not be considered as opposed notions.
